The BraunPrize 2018 challenges creative minds to envision design concepts that truly matter.
Our global environment is becoming increasingly complex – our focus should be on what is essential, on
creating fewer but better solutions and experiences.
By taking on global problems or simply improving the quality of individual lives, we want to encourage
innovation that can be physical or virtual, scientific or technical, or that changes our behavior for the better.
Awards will go to exceptional ideas and product design concepts – two or three dimensional, including
interactive – that offer progress and improvement, that are significant, substantial, and meaningful: design for
what matters.
The BraunPrize 2018 theme is: "Design for what matters"
The product concepts submitted should represent innovations in design, technology, sustainability and user
experiences. The conceptual designs should be developed with user needs in mind. Concepts can address
global problems or find simple, ingenious solutions for daily routines. Participants are free to choose any
subject for their product concept as long as the ideas are significant, substantial, meaningful and connect to
the theme: design for what matters.
The BraunPrize has always been entirely independent of the Braun product range and is not restricted to
products from the consumer goods sector.
The jury assesses all product concepts using the following criteria:
Focal point of the product concept’s design should be the benefit it provides for the user and society.
The following additional factors are also taken into account during the assessment process:
The BraunPrize competition is pleased to welcome all global submissions from entrants that are 18 years of age or older.
Entries will be separated into two categories and judged individually:
Students: product concepts from students who are still studying or (for recent graduates) which were created during the time of study
Young Talents: product concepts from young designers who have graduated within the last 5 years Entries must be product design and/or product interaction concepts that are not yet on the market or in production.
The focus of the BraunPrize is on product design. Software, interaction or media design will be considered as an integral part of an overall product concept (hardware and software).
There is no fee for participation. Submissions from all countries will be considered. Several projects can be submitted per person. However, every concept can only be registered once.
Individual or team participations are accepted and there is no limit in group size. Please choose one contact person and fill in that person’s data in the registration form. The names of all other team members must be listed in the respective field and all team members will receive equal recognition.
All P&G and Braun employees or their relatives are excluded from the competition. Also, no relative of a jury member (design firm, colleague, team or family member, etc.) is permitted to enter. Any involvement will result in automatic disqualification from the competition.
By submitting a product concept to the BraunPrize competition, participants agree to multiple reproduction and promotional publication of product material associated with that person’s data. The payment of the prize money gives P&G the right of usage for all nominated projects* with no time limit, starting from the day the jury has agreed on the competition winners.
*Nominated projects are defined as: Sustainability Awards, Finalists (subsequently Gold-Silver-Bronze awards), Special Mentions and any other outstanding exhibition projects from the categories Students and Young Talents.
Any material relating to the submission may be used for the purpose of BraunPrize promotional work, i.e., the BraunPrize exhibition (print and online), catalogue, BraunPrize websites, press releases, and media toolkits. P&G may not alter or amend the material without the written agreement of the designer. Participants that do not win a prize hold the right to refuse exhibition or publication of their work.
It is not P&G’s intention that any product design be produced.
Cash prizes will be paid within one month of the announcement of the final judging. Any currency restrictions in force will be handled to ensure timely payments. P&G is responsible for arranging permission to remit the prize money to foreign participants. The prize money does not include remuneration for the use of designer’s copyright.
The BraunPrize holds the right to substitute a jury member in case of illness or unavailability. In this case any changes will be communicated at the earliest possible time.
The decision of the jury is final and abiding. There is no correspondence between jury and participants. The personal data of BraunPrize participants will not be disclosed until the jury decision is final.
The organizer of the BraunPrize competition is the BraunPrize team. - The BP team acts as the point of contact between participants and the jury, e.g. to facilitate questions and share the answers with all parties. - The BP team ensures that jury decisions and reporting are carried out according to the agreed process, but does not in any way take part in the jury’s duties or decision-making. - The BP team does not make any assessment of the quality of submitted design work. The quality of the submissions alone will determine the jury’s selection of project nominations. For this reason, the names of participants must remain anonymous until the jury decision is final. The BP team ensures that each submission does not show any distinguishing mark or signature, so that each entry is presented to the jury anonymously. - The BP team facilitates the entry submission process to ensure that submissions meet the competition conditions and eligibility requirements as explained in the rules. They will examine all submissions to determine whether they meet the rules, and exclude those that do not. The team is also responsible for passing all eligible entries on to the jury and keeping a register of all submissions.

Entrants who submit all requested materials by November 20, 2017 will automatically participate in a drawing for three exclusive Braun wristwatches. The winners will be chosen randomly and notified by email.
In the jury session, the entries are evaluated by the panel of judges with great care and thoroughness; many discussions will follow to select the best entries. The best entries will be notified via email after the jury session, in early June 2018, to prepare their submissions for the next judging step. They may qualify as a Finalist, Special Mention or Sustainability Award winner by sending a video presentation of their project to the jury by early July 2018.
In the next judging step, the Finalists for Gold-Silver-Bronze Awards in each category are chosen, as well as
the winners of the Sustainability Awards. In addition, the jury will select further outstanding projects to be part
of the BraunPrize exhibition.
Those who qualify will receive further information about next steps to prepare their presentation to the design
forum. A physical design model need only be submitted if specifically requested by us. Travel and
accommodation costs for the award winners will be covered.
The final selection of award winners will be made in the "Design Forum". Here, the Finalists will present their projects to the jury and a selected audience of about 200 representatives who are either designers or who work in industry, technology and the media and have a special interest in the field of design. The Design Forum then votes to select the final Gold, Silver and Bronze winners.
The Design Forum is part of the BraunPrize event and concludes with the announcement of all winners. Following the award ceremony, everyone interested in the BraunPrize competition and its outcome is invited to visit the online exhibition.
The total prize money for both categories is $75,000 USD. In addition to the cash prizes, all award winners will
receive a trophy and a certificate.
The best entries will also be presented in the BraunPrize exhibition and made public in the international press
